As lesbian feminists sociologists of a certain age (i.e., older) with a long professional history of interpretivist/interactionist scholarship in gender and sexuality, we are intrigued with recent socio-historical shifts in gender and sexual identities and expressions (e.g., trans masculine rather than butch lesbian). These expressions reflect shifting social forms of classification that may indicate a broader acceptance of gender and sexual variance, but may also result in unanticipated and heightened forms of exclusion. For instance, is there is “right” way to be gay/queer/trans in current cultural practices? How are these shifting scripts/classifications influencing choices about who we think we can be? What does this variance suggest about the ways in which we make sense of bodies, feelings, and interactional expectations around gender and sexuality? These are a few of the questions that we’d like to dialogue on based on our respective socio-historical perspectives.
